GST Compliance Mistakes Small Businesses Commonly Make
Sakshi Vengurlekar · Senior GST Consultant · 10 March 2026
Most GST problems we see are administrative rather than technical. The law was understood; the process simply was not followed consistently.
Invoicing comes first. An invoice missing a correct GSTIN, place of supply or HSN detail creates a problem for your customer as much as for you, and correcting it later is far more work than getting it right at issue.
Second is treating returns as separate exercises rather than one reconciled set. Your outward supplies, your books and the credit visible to you should tell the same story. When they drift apart month after month, the gap grows quietly until a reconciliation becomes a project.
Third is claiming credit on the basis of a supplier's invoice alone, without checking that the supplier has actually reported the supply. Credit depends on more than your own paperwork.
Fourth is misreading place of supply on services delivered outside your own state, which changes the nature of the tax charged.
Fifth, and the most avoidable, is filing nothing during a quiet period. A nil return still has to be filed, and a lapsed filing history creates disproportionate trouble.
Want your GST filings reconciled properly each month? We can take it on.
